At the foot of the Breña y Marismas del Barbate coastal reserve and just south of Cádiz, these eight Andalucían cottages are nestled into Casas Karen's rambling, colourful garden. Guests can bed down in the Choza Pequeña, a traditional thatched choza de paja constructed from straw and bamboo, or Casa Karen 2 has a roof terrace with views over to the north African coastline. The Costa de la Luz's unspoilt beaches, pine forests and the Trafalgar lighthouse are all five to 10 minutes away.

Across Andalucia, on the Costa de la Luz, there's a more low-key alternative vibe. The town of Vejer de la Frontera, sitting on a hillock a few miles inland, is in many ways a traditional spot - the children learn flamenco while the older women dress all in black and keep their heads covered. But at night a young, easy-going crowd fills the cobbled backstreets outside the couple of small bars, listens to music, smokes, drinks and snogs. Down on the coast, the beaches of  Los Canos de Meca have attracted hippies since the 1960s, but as yet it hasn't turned into a tie-dyed theme park, even in high summer when the campsites take on the feel of a Thailand beach party. Karen worked in the music business before recognising, in this group of old farm buildings, and outlet for her creativity. Her guest accommodation, between pinewoods and beach, as grown organically over the years. Casa Karen 1 and Casa Karen 2 are the most independent; other rooms and apartments are better if you want to be sociable. Decoration takes its inspiration from the local surroundings and local here means Andalucían and Moroccan – the high mountains of the Magreb are visible on clear days. The place attracts people with a creative impulse and the atmosphere is totally laid back – like Caños itself, so popular with young travellers. There´s walking, riding, biking in the Parque Natural – and personal advice on where to eat. If self – catering is seems daunting, a friend of Karen´s can come and cook for you (veggie, local) and a massage with aromatic oils is allways available as well as reiki, tai chi and yoga. There´s even a life coaching session for you on the house.

Footprint, Costa de la Luz; A delightful complex with a range of accommodation in characterful buildings that include a barn and thatched huts. There are hammocks to lounge about in and are available for well -priced weekly rentals. Recommended.

Trotter´s Gids (Guide du Routard);Een relikwie uit de flowerpower… Traditionele huisjes in stro en hout (choza) in een tuin rond een gerestaureerd centraal hoevegebouw, 5 min. van het strand. Ze zijn mooi ingericht en zelfs vrij comfortabel. Dankzij de traditionele bouwtechniek zijn ze zelfs een beetje koel in de zomer. Geen airco dus. Een rustige en originele plek om te herbronnen.
