The Spanish and the Andaluz in particular have always held a “live and let live” view to other people’s sexuality. Different expressions of sexuality have long existed in the country side. Indeed the very phrase from Cadiz used to be a euphemism for being gay. The reasons for such liberal values could be partly due to the region’s location. On the southern most tip of mainland Europe on the Atlantic coast facing out towards the new world and Morocco tantalisingly close.

On a clear day the coast of Morocco is very visible from Caños, raising from the sea like a fairytale fabled land you can even make out the white washed sugar cubed buildings of Tangiers. One can take the fast ferry from Tarifa to Tangiers. You can have breakfast in Europe and lunch in Africa!
This fascinating City that was once an inter zone. Was famed as a Mecca for freethinkers. Attracting numerous writers and artists over the years, such as Paul Bowles, Truman Capote, Tennesse Williams, Gor Vidal. The beat writers Alan Guinsberg, William S. Burroughs and Gregory Corso followed in the mid fifties.

Los Caños de Meca has for many years attracted people with Bohemian/ alternative attitudes that have over the years blended and mixed with the locals to make Caños what it is today.

A place famed for its extreme natural beauty and vibrant liberal values.
In summer time the beaches are bustling with a young trendy metro sexual crowd, however the vibe is very different to Sitges and Ibiza. Think more Goa with chiringuito beach bars, “hippie” markets and Moroccan Jaimas (Bedouin tents).

There is a vibrant night life in the summer months, with a variety of late night bars and clubs. The feel is very much of a mixed crowd without the need for segregation, as is often the case in the Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands, where the bars are split between gay and straight.

The jewel in the crown of Los Caños has to be its many stunning beaches and coves with natural spring waters. Here you will find naturism freely practised (best avoided on busier family beaches).

The region has built a reputation for offering a multitude of “complementary” practices. Many forms of massage and holistic therapies are available here. There is also yoga practiced on the beach during the long summer months.
