The Pueblos Blancos (white villages)
Scattered across the hillsides of Andalucia are clusters of small, sugar-cube villages dating back to the Moorish occupation. Located just a short drive away from Caños, Vejer de la Frontera is one of the best preserved and most handsome of the villages, and has a rich history. According to legend, a Moroccan Emir married a girl from Vejer and they moved back to Morocco. She missed her village so much that he built a replicate - the famous indigo blue painted village of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains - where she could bask in the memories of her beloved home in Spain.
Today Vejer is a great place to mooch around with several excellent restaurants and good shops for high quality, local crafts. More detailed guides can be found in all of our houses, chozas and the beach apartment.
Morocco
Tangier is an easy day trip from Los Caños de Meca. Beloved by innumerable famous artists and writers in the 1960s, like Jack Kerouac, William S Burroughs and Paul Bowles, Tangier is a thriving modern Moroccan town today. If you only have a day, stroll through the central market in the heart of the medina to stock up on herbs, spices and olives before heading up into the Kasbah which stands proud on the cliffs above the Atlantic. There are innumerable small stores selling local arts and crafts, textiles and leather goods and you’ll find the people friendly and engaging.
